Indonesia’s attraction is well known; however, tourists who visit Indonesia are mostly concentrated in the country’s two busiest, most crowded, and most expensive islands, Java and Bali. If you try to learn all about Indonesia, there are actually many treasures that are hidden in many parts of the country.

As an archipelago, Indonesia consists of thousands of islands, many of which offer unique attraction that is still relatively unexplored. If you are curious about all hidden treasures that you can find in Indonesia,

1. Moluccas/Maluku

Moluccas has many beauties that are not yet fully explored. More than a decade ago, Moluccas was heated by ethnic conflict, but now, Moluccas has become an attractive and safe place to visit. You can find many serene tropical beaches in Moluccas. Go to Saparua and you can enjoy amazing water activities in the crystal-clear blue water of the sea. Being one of the first places in Indonesia to be colonized by western colonial powers, there are so many relics and remains of the colonial era, so Moluccas is also a great place to visit if you want to learn more about Indonesia’s past.

2. Papua

The great island of Papua is located in the easternmost part of Indonesia. This province is rarely visited by both domestic and foreign tourists due to relative lack of development and violent secessionist movement that occur in that province. Nonetheless, Papua is a safe tourism destination to visit and there are actually many hidden tourism treasures that you can find there.

The most well-known of those treasures is Raja Ampat Island, where you can find real tropical paradise that is not yet touched by human’s violent hands.

3. Sulawesi

Sulawesi is a major island that is located slightly in the eastern part of Indonesia. Sulawesi is also not yet fully explored by tourists, although there are actually many hidden treasures that this island offers. In the northernmost tip of this island, you can enjoy amazing underwater beauty in Bunaken, which is considered one of very few places on earth that feature amazing corals.

You can also visit a beautiful hill in Kawangkoan, which gives its visitors romantic sensation when they visit it. When thing that you should not miss when visiting a tropical country is a chance to enjoy an amazing trek at tropical rainforest. If this is what you are looking for, you should visit Tangkoko National Rainforest, which is known not only for its natural purity, but also for the black-crested macaques that inhabit it.

4. Lombok

Lombok is an island located east of Bali. Despite its proximity to the most famous place in Indonesia, it is not fully explored until recently. Today, Lombok is a relatively popular tourist destination. In the main island, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano that is one of the highest peaks in Indonesia.

But the most famous tourist destinations in Lombok are located off-shore. There are three satellite islands that are very popular among tourists, Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno. Visit those islands as they offer some attractions and cuisines that you cannot find in Bali.
